What is granite?


Granite is natural stone that comes from the earth which makes each countertop unique. No two slabs

are the same.


Why should I choose granite for my kitchen countertops?


As mentioned above, each slab of granite is unique. More importantly, granite works for busy kitchens

that are used by families because of its durability. Granite is heat and scratch resistant and is easy to

maintain.


Should granite countertops be sealed and resealed in the future?


When your countertops are installed, your installer will recommend you have them sealed. Although

granite is a very hard stone, it is porous. Grease, oil and other liquids can seep into the stone and cause

stains. When the counters are sealed the chances of them becoming stained diminishes greatly. Also,

when granite is sealed, your counters are more hygienic. Don’t forget that granite is porous so germs

can easily hide and grow bacteria.


How often should have a granite countertop resealed?


The general thought is to have granite countertops resealed every 12 to 18 months. The true answer

depends on how often and how the counters are used. Ask your granite what sealant they use and their

recommendation for having them resealed. Just be aware after the resealing process, you have to wait

24 hours to use them again.


Can you do more than straight edges?


You should ask to examples of edges the installer can do for the edges. You may want to something

different that could enhance your countertop’s look.


Ask to see examples of their work.


They should have a portfolio type of file ready to share with you without hesitation.

What is the timeline to have the work completed?


If you are doing a complete kitchen renovation you may want to schedule your installation with the

other trades.


Do you have a showroom I can visit?


You will want to be able to choose the slab used for your countertop, so there must be a showroom.


What is the cost of a granite installation?


Be sure you get a written estimate that includes absolutely everything. Material, labour, special requests

and taxes need to be spelled out to avoid surprises and for use if you’re shopping around.
